Fabcoach #Tramlines 2014 Highlights ! Part 2

Sunday dawned, another brilliant sunny day for #Tramlines 2014.

First stop the Folk Forest in Endcliffe Park. It was fantastically rammed full of families, beardies & folksyies ! Can we have a bigger space next year !! Had to buy yummy Lemon & Poppyseed cake for breakfast from Seven Hills bakery stand…coffee from Motorola Coffee ! The band was Nat Jones & friends.. very musical, lovely harmonies & the prefect start to the day.

rollo

Onto the bus and off to see Rolo Tomassi at Corp ( Corporation to you ) . V fiesty , 2 screamo singers & as usual for Corp bands at #Tramlines excellent !! Nice new stage backdrop !!

Thence to the Cathedral to see Womans Hour . Sadly the gremlins meant a long wait .

Liked the pyramids on stage but left to go to the Millenium gallery to attempt to see Bloodsport at 7.00. Once again a re scheduling put them on to 9.00 so we scooted to the Leadmill to see Blossomer, and Nick McSweeney filling in for the injured Hey Sholay. 10 out of 10 to Leadmill door staff who made us get a pass out for later !!

Back up the hill to Millennium Gallery to see DJ ..really good    then AT LAST and thankfully well worth it, 3 piece Bloodsport .

bloodsport

Amazing one of the best bits of Tramlines . Described as

tags: aggrobeat diy experimental afro-beat hybrid vigour records life in units post punk soukous Sheffield  I heard Brian Eno, Talking Heads, Swans all in one go… relentless beat … uplifting !!

We would have loved to see the amazing Bo Ningen too !! But nipped back down to the Leadmill, past the queue with our passouts !!

The Leadmill was absolutely jam packed for the last gig of the night Slow Club . Sadly the sound system was slower … the crowd were hot & restless … the brave Slow Club took to the stage for an acoustic version then finally sans monitors they burst into action !! A brilliant end to a jam packed weekend at #Tramlines2014 !!

Slow Club

Can’t wait till next year , will have my weekly bus pass ready for another epic trail of musicality !!

Live life to the full and if you are interested in a bit of techy, career focussing coaching then please follow me on Twitter @fabcoach or subscribe to my newsletters via www.karenperkinslifecoach.co.uk Contact me here !

Support Inspiring Women ‘Women in manufacturing ‘session at Global Manufacturing Fest

I am contacting you as a supporter of the Inspiring Women Forum. Here is a message from Kate Stephenson

” How many times  have you attended an event with an all male line up of speakers? I am not suggesting that the male speakers are not excellent at what they do, but I am keen to ensure fair representation at events.

Due to the nature of the subject and the connections within the organising committee, The Global Manufacturing Festival did have an all male line up (10 men in total).

Inspiring Women are now supporting a Women in Manufacturing session, which takes place on the morning of the Conference and Trade Show. Details are attached. ”

The GMF itself is free to attend, and with over 1000 delegates expected, its also an excellent networking opportunity.

Can I ask you please to circulate the attached flyer, and encourage people to attend the GMF and support the Women in Manufacturing session? I’m keen to give the speakers a good audience, promote women in manufacturing/engineering and show that having this session has benefited the festival as  a whole.

http://www.globalmanufacturingfestival.com/speakers/

Thank you for your support and I hope to see you on the 25th June.

Kind Regards

Kate Stephenson

KAREN PERKINS @fabcoach INTERVIEWS MARK TILLISON CEO OF TILLISON CONSULTING

Mark Tillison, MD and Biggest Marketing Geek at Tillison Consulting, http://tillison.co.uk

tillson best

1 Describe your job in 140 characters!
Most days, it feels like being the captain of a great football team, celebrating victories we’ve helped clients achieve

2 What did you want to be when you grew up ?
An Accountant. I met a cousin of mine when I was young. Maths was my strength at school, he had a nice car and impressed me. I worked through school to a Business Course at College which was the foundation to further study and a career in Accountancy. The module in the first year killed any dreams I had of becoming an Accountant – it was just too rigid, had too many rules for me and frankly, just squashed my young spirit. I successfully completed the Business and Finance course, which was otherwise inspiring, interesting and as I’d later discover, very useful.

3 What are you most proud of in your Career  ?
Having taken some time out to reflect on what we’ve achieved as a team over the last 2-3 years has been an amazing experience. We’re so focused on the constant changes in our industry and goals and objectives for next month, next quarter, next year, that we lose sight of the amazing journey we’ve been on.

4 Which famous person inspired you at work and why ?There aren’t any specifically, but I have a lot of respect for Richard Branson. To me, Richard just “gets it”. He has fun in what he’s doing and has a real passion and vision for what he believes in. Whatever ventures he’s been involved in seem to be more of a cause than a profit-making exercise.

5 What & where is your favourite Networking event ?
We coordinate a monthly social event for local businesses – Curry Business (http://tillison.co.uk/curry). It’s a completely informal event to meet, chat and eat good food. No elevator pitches, no membership, no commitment to come every month. 20% of our bill also goes to a nominated local charity each month as does the venue. We get a great, fun night out, the restaurant gets a huge (30+ people) booking and a charity gets a pretty sizeable donation.

6 Where would you take a client for a ‘thank you ‘coffee or lunch in Sheffield ?
I hear Tamper coffee, Agraah and the Wig and Pen are great places.

I’m not local as I work all over the UK , but if it was a client, I think I’d be letting them pick, though I’d do my best to influence Indian food. You wouldn’t be the first to spot a theme here!

7 What is your tip for beating stress at work ?
Celebrate every victory. It’s very easy to get stuck complaining about things that aren’t going as well as you want, clients behaving badly or technology not working as you expect, but the truth is that our days are filled with successes and victories – we just take them for granted and get frustrated when some things don’t go as well as the majority. Personally, I need to vent about this stuff and I’m grateful to have a team around me that knows this and gives me an alternative perspective on situations.

8 What is your favourite way to relax ?
Since an young age, I’ve played competitive snooker to a reasonable standard and play for a team in a local league. There’s always a need for practice to maintain a competitive standard. My teenage son also has the bug and I help support and coach the childrens’ team at the weekends. Seeing them achieve success and winning recent awards has made me very proud.

9 What advice would you give to a young person setting out on their career path ?
Careers don’t get built 9 to 5. Find a career doing something that you love, something that inspires you, something that you can be proud of. My timekeeping may not always be the best, but no one could ever accuse me of not putting in the hours and committing to a cause. Find a career doing something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.

10 How can people contact me ?

Via Twitter http://twitter.com/Tillison, or just type “Tillison” in to Google. Predictably, you’ll find me occupying most of the first page.

Mark Tillison has helped build businesses online for the last 10 years. Mark formed Tillison Consulting in 2007, a team of digital marketing Specialists who work with ambitious businesses through training, coaching and managed services to help them make a profit online.

Fabcoach interviews Jill Turner – Principal at Jill Turner Associates Holistic Financial Planning

Fabcoach, Karen Perkins Life and Career Coach from Sheffield interviews on of her favourite businesses every week on her Blog    www.fabcoach.wordpress.com

This week it’s

Jill Turner – Principal at Jill Turner Associates Holistic Financial Planning    www.jillturnerassociates.co.uk
Follow her on Twitter     @joinedupjill

1 Describe your job in 140 characters!

Working hard to ensure you and those who depend on you are more financially secure now and in the future.

2 What did you want to be when you grew up ?

I  don’t think anyone ever wakes up one day and knows that they want to be a financial adviser,   in the States maybe where the profession of Financial Planning has a much higher profile  but here in the UK, we need to raise our public profile.    I remember really wanting to work with children and perhaps being a doctor as I liked Science and biology at school.  That was until someone told me you have to disect people who have donated their bodies to medical science, I’m  squeamish at the best of times,  so that was a definite no no.   I’ve always had an interest in radio and broadcast journalism from my teens and   produced my own radio show for five years.  If I could earn a living for my family broadcasting roots music that would be bliss.   However, I am fortunate enough to teach radio production at Sheffield University’s World Music summer school and that keeps my hand in.    I love what I do now and sometimes wish that my career in financial services had provided more stability as a medial career may have done but it perfectly combines my love of mathematics, my passion to help people and gives me time to be at home with my own children.

3.  What are you most proud of in your Career ?

Not giving up,  completing the last of my diploma exams at a time of acute workplace stress and life changes then  going on to establish my own practice.

jill turner 2014

4 Which famous person inspired you at work and why ?

I’m not really one for celebrities and  famous people, I think our young people can be misguided into looking for inspiration from famous people rather than seeking their own mentors or looking to support each other and give each other feedback.

If I am to choose a famous person it would be Bishop Desmond Tutu, he’s always so happy, forgiving, patient , non judgmental and very wise.

5 What & where is your favourite Networking event ?

I had the time to go to Faye’s netwalking once and really enjoyed the relaxed way I could just walk alongside a stranger in the fresh air, no agenda, no 60 second pitch but just that great feeling of getting to know someone and swapping ideas, that you may never have had the chance to otherwise.

In terms of return on investment, confidence boosting, building trusted relationships, training,  giving and receiving business leads  it has to be BNI,  which I joined about nine months ago, its demanding and I have to say challenging at times but it has opened doors and landed me business, that I would never have imagined possible.

In terms of personal development it has to be the Ubuntu Pods, facilitated by Jane Swain for whom I have great respect.  It is an invitation only group of business owners, solopreneurs, thought leaders and senior managers who come together in a board room style meeting to discuss best practice and sound out business issues.

6. Where would you take a client for a ‘thank you ‘coffee or lunch in Sheffield ?

I’d like to say Wagamama’s but sometimes popping soya pods and eating noodles can be a bit too informal and messy.    Before the children I used to go out to hear live music and my passion for  Djing and broadcasting meant I spent a lot time with headphone on so now hearing is not so brilliant.  In  places where there’s a lot of  background noise it’s a bit tricky to keep up with conversations, so the venue  can’t be too noisy but it is important for the place to have some ambience.   All in all I think it would have to be Eten on York Street facing the green by the Cathedral.  It’s a relaxed and welcoming Bistro with delicious well priced food, an eclectic assortment of china and proper tea.

7 What is your tip for beating stress at work ?

Making a pot of tea.

Trying not to work long hours.

Getting enough sleep although that is difficult with two under fives.

Being open honest and transparent with my clients.

Maintaining  confidence and belief that I have done everything correctly, in the best interest of my clients and also to the best of my ability.

Not jumping to conclusions and taking time to reflect.

If all else fails I like to go for a walk I am very lucky in where I live,  I can be deep in the woods or out in the fields in less than two minutes.
jill turner logo

8 What is your favourite way to relax ?

Playing with my children,  putting on some music and dancing  and forming our own percussion band.

I also like to cook and share food and a beer with friends and family, that’s another great way to relax

9 What advice would you give to a young person setting out on their career path ?

        Enjoy the journey

Never be afraid to ask either for the business, for the job, for advice, for help, for feedback and enjoy the journey.   If you don’t ask you don’t get.

Believe in yourself and your vision.

        Don’t give up.

10 Tips for Measuring the real Effects of Social Media

By Karen Perkins Life, Career, Social Media Coach

life coach in sheffield career coach karen perkins

1 Being on Social Media & linking it to your website blog etc. will give you results anyway & over 70% of companies don’t bother to monitor so you are not alone.  * The effect builds over time… Be patient !
* You cannot not be on Social media * It’s free *It shows you are modern *It helps drive people to your website

2 Ask everyone how they found you & what could help in future?   Ask when they contact you & on your customer feedback forms. Concentrate on that e.g. Do your customers prefer Facebook ?

3 See how many Likes, comments, shares & followers, Friends, mentions, re tweets & re blogs you get.

4 Measure your performance! Has your business increased after your posts & tweets? What are you measuring it against?
Map your sales/customer trends over a year/ previous advertising campaigns. Map numbers before & after your social media campaign. What had the most effect?

5 Google yourself & your sector keywords. Using these via Social media can help your rankings.

6 Use free Metrics yourself    Free tools
(NB Work out how much time you spend on Social media vs. the Number of customers/sales)
-Google analytics
-Wordpress stats & click throughs
-Facebook insights
-Buffer shows Impact of tweets click throughs etc. www.Bufferapp.com
-What else ?

7 Use paid for metrics … but do some Googling & get quotes/recommendations & proposals before spending money. Be clear what you want from a consultant: PR & profile raising or paying customers, and then choose the best company/method for your brand.

Compare the results you get in paying customers with the free tools in 6.

8 Target your ads & posts at the right people in the first place e.g. Facebook campaigns target chosen groups

9 Recommendations & endorsements (less so) mean a lot of free PR for you. So ask for them! E.g. “Please connect with me & recommend me on LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/pub/karen-perkins/21/173/73a

10 Relax, digital detox sometimes, enjoy yourself online or finally help an intern from Sheffield Hallam to gain experience of social media marketing for you by giving them a placement.

Happy Tweeting etc.
